My approach to music teaching has been profoundly influenced by the philosophies and methodologies of Shinichi Suzuki and Zoltán Kodály.
- Suzuki and Kodaly both believed in the importance of music as an integral part of children's development and as a means of nurturing spiritual growth.
- They understood that children learn first through their senses and later through rational thinking.
- Suzuki and Kodaly realized the importance of the early years and the effects of the environment.
- Both men understood how children learn and advocated that the youngest children deserve the highest qualified teachers and the Master composers as their models.
- Both knew that in order for society to change, we must begin with the youngest children and with education.
- While Kodaly stressed the importance of schools in the lives of the children, Suzuki emphasized the teachers' responsibility to educate the parents.
- Both philosophies teach music with a natural, sequential approach aimed to develop each child's potential while respecting individual differences and learning styles.
- Both men were innovators and men of great vision whose dream it was to change the world through music.
